Aged-Out Teens
Every year, thousands of children around the world reach a milestone that should be filled with hope: adulthood. But for teens growing up without family care, this moment often marks the beginning of deep uncertainty.
Globally, an estimated 5.4 million children live in orphanages or residential care. Many of them will “age out” of the system at 16–18 years old with little preparation for independent life. Without the stability and guidance of a family, these young people are suddenly expected to navigate adulthood on their own—without support, safety nets, or a place to call home.
The outcomes can be devastating. Studies consistently show that youth who age out of institutional care face significantly higher risks of homelessness, unemployment, exploitation, trafficking, and involvement in crime. Many lack access to education, job training, or even basic identification documents. Without intervention, the cycle of vulnerability continues—impacting not only their future, but generations to come.
A Different Path Forward
We believe that no young person should step into adulthood alone.
Through our partnerships in countries like India and Ukraine, we support teens and young adults transitioning out of institutional care with the tools and relationships they need to thrive.
This often includes:
• Safe housing and transitional shelter
• Life-skills training (budgeting, cooking, employment readiness)
• Access to education and vocational opportunities
• Mentorship and relational support (includes counseling)
• Basic needs like food, clothing, and hygiene essentials
More than anything, we work to ensure that each young person is seen, known, and supported - not left to navigate life alone.
